LEWIS HAMILTON SETS A NEW RECORD AS HE SECURES 91ST CAREER POLE POSITON AT BRITISH GRAND PRIX

Lewis Hamilton secured his 91st career pole position as he set a new track record of 1.24.303s at the Silverstone, becoming the driver with the most pole position in his home country. 2019 Pole starter Valtteri Bottas, who led in qualifier two with a lap time of 1.25.015s came in second after he was beaten to the pole position by his Mercedes’ teammate by more than three tenths of a second. Red bull’s Max Verstappen, secured his team’s first top-three start at Silverstone since 2016 coming in third place 1.33 seconds behind Hamilton on a track that saw shimmering sunlight against a predicted rainy weather.

Hamilton had previously entered Q3 after failing to finish fastest in both Q1 and Q2. He made a rare mistake in Q2, spinning at Luffield and dragging gravel onto the track to cause a red flag. But he showed his master class, smashing the track record twice at the qualifiers. The silver cars were 0.7s quicker than in 2019, whereas Red Bull and Ferrari are both slower than they were in Q3 this time last year.

The qualifiers’ witnessed most drivers using the medium tires. Ferrari opted to strip the downforce of their car in a bid to make up for their power deficit, and that has helped their qualifying form as Charles Leclerc came in fourth with a lap time of 1.25.427s and his teammate, four time champion, Sebastian Vettel, rounded out the top ten with a tenth place finish.

Lando Norris came in fifth position after topsy turvy qualifiers one and two; meaning the Briton has now started in the top five twice in four races. Racing point’s Lance Stroll, who sneaked into Q3 after a rough Q2, came in sixth place. Carlos Sainz, who almost matched the time set by Verstappen in Q2 came in seventh place as Renault’s Daniel Riccardo came in 8th position. Teammate Esteban Ocon came in ninth to finish the top ten at the qualifiers.

The British Grand Prix kicks off at 14:10 Nigerian time. Conditions are expected to be dry, but cooler again. Hamilton has won this race five times in the six years. Can he make it seven wins at the venue, which will see him break another record for most wins at a home race? Hamilton currently shares this record (six wins) with – Alain Prost
